PPIE Centennial Commemorative Broadside

Featuring a block designed, engraved, and printed by master wood engraver Richard Wagener, and text, titles, and ornaments designed by Fred and Barbara Voltmer with Li Jiang.

On October 19, 2015, at the Club’s annual printing party, members and guests commemorated the centennial of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition by printing their own broadsides on the Club’s Columbian hand press. The broadside features an image of Festival Hall, and text about its design and use.

11” x 17”. Designed and printed by Richard Wagener, Li Jiang, and Fred and Barbara Voltmer, and finished on the Club’s Columbian hand press. Paper: Zerkall Litho. Edition of 125 copies, with numbers 69-125 available for a tax-deductible donation of $50.

On July 25, 2011 The Book Club of California hosted a Pre-Centennial Poster Printing Party. Club members and their guests were invited to print their own Centennial Broadsides on the Club’s Columbian hand-press.

21” x 15”. Printed on the occasion of the Club’s 100th birthday by Fred Voltmer, Barbara Voltmer, and Li Jiang of Havilah Press, on a Columbian hand-press using antique wooden type. Paper: Zerkall Book. Edition of 110 copies. Available for a tax-deductible donation of $50.

This particular piece combines my interest in printmaking as well as in different periods of letterpress design work. The image looks and feels like a letterpress illustration from a children’s book of my childhood. The conservative symmetry of the type handling, the choice of Garamond types, reflect much of 20th century design, limited as it was by the letterpress technology of the day. The content of the broadside is drawn from a 19th century illustrated travel book on California dating from 1855…

Fisher (1918); plus an insert, Autobiography & Biography: Channeling M.F.K. Fisher by Joan Reardon, culinary historian and author.

Now the hills are cut through with super-highways, and I can’t say whether we sat that night in Mint Canyon or Bouquet, and the three of us are in some ways even more than twenty-five years older than we were then. And still the warm round peach pie and the cool yellow cream we ate together that August night live in our heart’s palates, succulent, secret, delicious.
