Annual Keepsake Series

Robert Chandler, 2011

The Pacific Mail Steamship Company opened passenger and mail service to California in 1848, China in 1867, and lives today as the global container carrier APL. This keepsake contains biographies of a dozen historic steamers by foremost historians of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, as well as by world famous maritime archeologists who have dived on Pacific Mail wrecks. Portraits begin with the famed California, which steamed into San Francisco on February 28, 1849, and end with the beloved China (II), built in 1889, which closed her career with the Chinatown-based China Mail. Notable institutions, including the Huntington Library, Wells Fargo, the San Francisco Maritime Museum, the California State Library, and especially the private collection of Stephen and Jeremy Potash provided color illustrations, many not seen before.
