Annual Keepsake Series
Jacques Perilhou, 2013
Translated by Claudine Chalmers
The French participated in the California gold rush in very large numbers. Less is known, however, about French presence in the region prior to 1849, when California was ruled by first the Spanish, then Mexicans. As early as the eighteenth century, a few Frenchmen navigated the California coast as they pushed north from the western coasts of South America. This illustrated keepsake looks at twelve of them.
